What is a diabetic foot ulcer?

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are open wounds that typically develop on the feet due to poorly controlled diabetes. They result from a combination of peripheral neuropathy, poor circulation (peripheral vascular disease), and foot trauma or pressure—often caused by ill-fitting shoes.

According to the National Institutes of Health, 15–25% of people with diabetes will experience at least one foot ulcer in their lifetime. Diabetic foot ulcers are a leading cause of non-traumatic amputations in the United States.

Phoenix residents living with diabetic foot ulcers now have the opportunity to participate in a local clinical research study aimed at improving healing and quality of life. This study offers no-cost care, potential access to advanced treatment options, and compensation for time and travel. If you're struggling with a non-healing ulcer and want to explore new care possibilities, joining a clinical trial may be the right step toward recovery.
